Executed in 1903, Im Lehnstuhl sitzernd von vorne, beide Unteratme aufgestutzt (Adele Bloch-Bauer) is a preparatory sketch for Klimt's celebrated Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, residing in the Neue Galerie, New York's permanent collection. In mid-1903, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer commissioned Klimt to create a portrait of his wife, Adele, as an anniversary present for his wife's parents. Klimt's preparation for this portrait was more extensive than for any other work he ever created; between 1903 and 1904, he executed over a hundred preparatory drawings, many of which the Bloch-Bauers purchased.
