GUTENBERG BIBLE -- Biblia Latina . [Mainz: Johann Gutenberg and Johann Fust 1455]. Single leaf, royal 2° (353 x 252mm). One leaf from vol. II, containing II Corinthians, I:1-III:18. 42 lines, double column. Type: 1:146(138)G. 6-line initial in interlocking red and blue with green and red penwork decoration, 3 other initials in red, incipits in red. No watermark. (Tear into text neatly repaired, browned, some flaking at margin edges.) Laid into printed wrapper and early 20th-century brown morocco blindstamped in a 15th-century style (spine partly detached, rubbed at extremities). Provenance : Vollbehr, bookplate; pencilled note "New York-Berlin 29 Sept. 1931" on wrapper. A single paper leaf from the first book printed with moveable types. It was formerly owned by Otto Vollbehr of Berlin, whose collection, including a copy on vellum of the Gutenberg Bible from the Carinthian monastery of St. Paul, was bought by the Library of Congress in 1930 by an Act of Congress. Two other single leaves formerly owned by Vollbehr are known (Needham "Census", PBSA , vol. 79, 1985, pp.303-374, P31 and P34), but the present leaf is not recorded in Norman ( Census 1961) or Needham.
