An autograph letter signed by Margaret Hamilton to Ray Bolger
New York: 18 March 1969. Autograph letter signed 'Margaret Hamilton' to 'Dear Ray' on her Gramercy Park address stationery, with the original envelope. An exceptionally warm letter of encouragement from the 'Wicked Witch of the West' to the 'Scarecrow'. Provenance : acquired directly from the Ray Bolger Estate. Written on opening night of the ill-fated musical Come Summer, the first production in which both Bolger and Hamilton appeared since the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz . The show lasted only seven performances on Broadway. “ When you are an elderly man, say, in thirty years, you may find pleasure in these pictures and words, which can inspire memory and enhance the quieter world we all dwell in upon occasion. I wish for you, your heart’s inmost desires and rich fulfillment and contentment and acceptance of all life means to you. …” [With:] A typed letter signed 'Agnes' [DeMille] to Ray Bolger. [N.p., 17 November 1968]. 1¼ pp. She assures him, “ I believe you can make this role one of the most memorable in musical history. ” DeMille was director and choreographer of Come Summer ; and her letter discusses the character of Phineas whom Bolger portrayed in the show.
