HAMILTON, Sir WILLIAM, collection . HANCARVILLE, PIERRE FRANÇOIS HUGUES, dit D'. Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities. Naples: [Francesco Morelli] 1766-67. 4 vols., large folio, 474 x 376mm. (18 5/8 x 14 7/8 in.), contemporary speckled calf (vols. 1 and 2) and sheep (vols. 3 and 4), spines gilt, vols. 1 and 2 with light brown calf lettering-pieces, edges stained red, the original tissues preserved in a separate folding box, bindings worn, spine of vol. 4 very worn, most inner hinges weak, lacking 1 uncolored plate and 2 colored plates, one double-page colored plate (from another copy?) loosely inserted in vol. 2, fol. x2 in vol. 1 with repaired 3-inch marginal tear just touching a footnote, fore-margin of plate 25 cut short, large tear to margin of plate 101, top margin of plate 106 stained yellow, the last plate of vol. 2 creased, short marginal tears to title of vol. 3 and a few other plates, tiny hole to first title-page of vol. 4, lower margins of vol. 1 dampstained throughout at gutters, scattered light foxing to vols. 1 and 2, staining to the first few text pages of vol. 3, occasional light showthrough and offsetting . FIRST EDITION, 2 hand-colored engraved titles (in English and French) in each volume, preface half-titles of vols. 3 and 4 printed in red and black, 5 engraved dedication leaves (2 in vol. 2), 433 (of 436 or 437) engraved plates, 181 hand-colored, many double-page or folding, 32 engraved head- and tail-piece vignettes and numerous large engraved initials (those of vol. 4 and four of the vignettes color-printed), by or after Giuseppe Bracci Giovanni Battista Nolli Edmond Beaulieu, Carmine Pignatori and others. Blackmer Catalogue 845; Berlin Katalog 890; Brunet I, 321; Cohen-de Ricci 474; Vinet 1528. Hugues d'Hancarville acted as Hamilton's agent and assisted him in amassing his important collection, which was sold to the British Museum in 1772. 500 copies are said to have been printed of this "édition splendide et de grand luxe" (Cohen-de Ricci), for which Hamilton had type specially imported from Venice. "This work is of great importance in the development of neo-classical designs for pottery and porcelain; it influenced Wedgwood especially" (Blackmer). The collation of the plates varies: the Blackmer copy contained 435 plates, the Northwick Park copy 436 plates and at least two other copies are known to contain 437 plates. (4)
