Designed and fabricated by California artist Mark Doolittle Orchid Box is a contrast in wood color and figure. The sides and front were fashioned from cream-colored maple wood native to the Pacific Northwest, Acer macrophyllem, with a rare "quilted" figure that is prized for its richness and depth. The top cover and inside divider were carved from an African Padauk, Pterocarpus soyauxii; a hardwood prized for its deep, rich red color. This wood was also used in the mitered joinery holding the box together. The orchids decorating the top and insider divider were carved from a light-colored North American basswood, Tilia americana, partially stained to create the characteristic color pattern. The inside top features two Chinese characters carved from Maple symbolizing (from left-to-right) "Beauty" and "Harmony." Measures 11 x 7 x 4 in.
