Title: Hand-drawn menu for New York women's singing group Author: Place: New York Publisher: Date: ca. 1890 Description: Menu / “The Rubinstein Club thank you for the honor of your presence this event and courteously invite you to attend their concerts the coming year”. 4 x 6.5”, 2pp. (No place or date; New York, ca., 1890?) With a hand-drawn front-cover illustration of a “camp out” cooking pot. The menu items offered, for 10 cents each: Bohemian Cup, Gipsy Fortune Sandwich, Esmerelda Sandwich, Ice Cream La Gipsy Named for the Russian composer Anton Rubinstein, the first “Rubinstein Club” of women singers was organized in New York City by opera chorus conductor William Chapman (who also wrote the “Waldorf Astoria March”) in 1887. The women participants were clearly intrigued by the “bohemian – gypsy” fantasy of passionate free spirits that influenced the early writing of Willa Cather. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good.
