Its follow up exhibition ‘HWPSMTB' at the Galerie Colette Allendy in 1948, brought together pioneers of abstract art rooted in personal expression including Hartung himself, Wols, Francis Picabia Francis Stahly, Georges Mathieu Michel Tapié and Camille Bryen The exhibition's success lead to extreme popularity of lyrical abstraction in Europe and later America during the 1950s as it dominated all other styles during this time. Personal expression in the form of abstraction continued to influence other movements internationally well beyond its apex during the 1950s with personal styles like Hartung's at the forefront. Often Hans Hartung's composition is reduced to a clustered grouped of dark lines against a light background. His informal, autonomous, and broad brushwork centered in the present lot reflects his objective of directness. The simplicity and clarity of technique exhibits a strong painting that goes beyond the idea of expressionism: "In my opinion the painting which is called abstract is none of the 'Isms' of which there have been so many lately, it is neither a 'style' nor an 'epoch' in art history, but merely a new means of expression, a different human language - one which is more direct than that of earlier painting."
