HANWAY, Jonas (1712-1786) -- The Words of such Pieces as are most usually performed by The Academy of Ancient Music. London: 1761. [ Bound with 3 other works :] [HAMILTON, Newburgh (fl. 1712-1759).] Samson. An Oratorio. As it is Performed at the Theatre-Royal in Covent-Garden. Alter'd from the Samson Agonistes of Milton. Set to Musick by Mr. Handel. London: J. and R. Tonson [1760?]. [nd:] [HUMPHREYS, Samuel (1698?-1738).] Deborah. An Oratorio: or Sacred Drama. As it is performed at the Theatre-Royal in Covent-Garden. The Musick composed by Mr. Handel. London: The Administrators of J. Watts [1765?]. 4 works in one volume, 8° and 4° (207 x 124mm). 12 tipped-in engravings, most after S. Wale, 10 of them hand-coloured, possibly by Hanway. (Oratorios folded to fit 8° format, light spotting and soiling, small repair to 1p. of manuscript.) Contemporary crimson morocco gilt for Jonas Hanway, covers with a border composed of roses and foliage, stars and suns, upper cover with a winged hour-glass, lower cover with a harp, both centred within a square border of stars, spine gilt with emblematic tools including the all-seeing eye, sun, rose, and head of Britannia, blue glazed endpapers (water-stain, mostly to upper cover, extremities rubbed). Provenance: 'Ms. Thomson' (presentation inscription from Hanway) -- George Hankey (booklabel) -- 'Horace Middleton from Ruth' (pencilled inscription). PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN AN EMBLEMATIC HANWAY BINDING, with two oratorios set to music by Handel, 'presented to [Ms. Thomson] a Young Lady who plays well on the Harpsicord & sings', WITH 7 PAGES OF HOLOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT signed and dated Jonas Hanway, Red Lion Square, 9 Oct 1767, including 16 lines in verse, introducing the work and explaining the significance of the mostly hand-coloured engravings bound into this volume. Hanway included these 'as an Abridgment of the History of Human Life' and as 'subjects for deep meditation'. A indefatigable eccentric and philanthropist, Hanway believed in the power of music to elevate the mind, and was passionately interested in symbolism. He bound works for presentation to royalty, patrons and friends, using tools which he designed or suggested to two distinct binders. The emblematic tools used in this binding are indicative of his second binder. A census of 23 such Hanway bindings is given in G.D. Hobson, English Bindings in the Library of J.R. Abbey (1940). Also bound in are 10 pages from an unidentified work explaining one of the engravings. ESTC T109615; ESTC T47055; ESTC T32174
