LIMITED EDITION, no. 313 of 1025 copies on hand-made Riccardi Paper of an edition of 1039, woodcut portrait and title-page design by William Nicholson PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Hardy on the limitation page: "Thomas Hardy. (After a visit from Professor & Mrs. Chew, October 1921.)." Laid in is a printed note from Mrs. Florence Hardy to Mrs. Lacy Chew of Bryn Mawr, Pa., thanking her for her "expression of sympathy" on the death of the novelist and adding in her holograph, "With memories of your visit & grateful thanks, F.E.H.," Max Gate, [21 February 1928], 1 page, 12mo, with original envelope. Samuel Chew, an American professor, published several articles on Hardy, as well as a book entitled Thomas Hardy Poet and Novelist (New York, 1921, rev. ed. 1928). Purdy, p. 187. A near-fine copy.
