HARDY, THOMAS. Tess of the d'Urbervilles. A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented. [London]: Osgood, McIlvaine [1892]. 8vo, original tan cloth, blocked in gilt, spine lettered in brown, brown morocco pull-off case . First One-Volume Edition, frontispiece portrait, with an important Preface by Hardy, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author on front flyleaf: "To Frederick Greenwood From Thomas Hardy September 1892." Purdy, p. 77. As Purdy notes (pp. 73-74) the nature of the novel and the negative reviews made Hardy "shy of presenting copies" of the first edition of Tess : the bibliographer records only three. However, for this first one-volume edition, published 30 September 1892, Hardy wrote a special Preface and "inscribed copies of the book to many friends..." (Purdy, p. 77). A pretty copy.
