Harold Larwood. Nottinghamshire & England 1924-1938. Original handwritten airmail letter from Larwood in his home in Kingsford, Sydney, Australia, dated 31st March 1957. Writing to his friend, Maurice Jackson, in Burton Joyce, Nottingham, Larwood acknowledges regular receipt of the Football Post that Jackson has been sending, 'I look forward to my weekly sport paper from Nottm... I am very pleased to see "Forest" doing so well, but sorry to see the "County" struggling' and hopes both teams succeed. He reports that the cricket season has closed in Australia, 'football (rugby) and soccer having commenced although the weather is better than your mid-summer' and doesn't miss the cold English winters. He describes the launch of television in Australia, 'now in full swing, we have 3 channels at present (2 commercial, 1 by the ABC), we have good programmes but the price of the sets is colossal, 250 guineas for a good set'. He looks forward to the England team touring in 1958, 'we have plenty of good youngsters of good promise, how in the world did Laker get all those wickets in the "Tests" is still a mystery to me, the Aussies must have put up a very poor show, of course Laker will not get the wickets out here'. He wonders how strong the Nottinghamshire side will be and remembers having 'a good reliable side' when he was young, and his admiration for George Gunn, 'the ease he played all kinds of bowling, was never in trouble'. Nicely signed 'Harold Larwood'. An interesting personal letter with good football and cricket content. G/VG
