HARRIS, John, editor (ca 1667-1719). Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca: or, a Compleat Collection of Voyages and Travels: Consisting of above Four Hundred of the most Authentick Writers. London: Thomas Bennet (and others), 1705.
HARRIS, John, editor (ca 1667-1719). Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca: or, a Compleat Collection of Voyages and Travels: Consisting of above Four Hundred of the most Authentick Writers. London: Thomas Bennet (and others), 1705. 2 volumes, 2 o (388 x 235 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces, 9 engraved maps (5 double-page or folding) 23 engraved plates. (Frontispieces laid down, one with chipping to margins, a few plates with tears or repairs, some marginal dampstains, minor worming.) Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked). FIRST EDITION. Harris compiled these many narratives to compete with Churchill's popular collection of voyages published in 1704 (see lot 11). Whereas Churchill concentrated on primary accounts, Harris chose travel narratives, vol. I being on navigation, circumnavigations and voyages to India, and vol. II on travels to the Americas, Europe and Asia. In his address to the reader in vol. I Harris remarks that his collection "begins with the most early Discoveries, and Settlements of Trade, and reaches down to the Year 1626, where Purchas ends his Collection. But you will find here a succinct Account, of the Books of very many other Authors, which are neither in Him nor Hackluit... The Second Volume hath nothing out of Purchas and Hackluit; but is entirely New: Being taken from the best of all the Modern Authors extant... the Index is so very large and compleat, that you may there readily find the Description of any Part of the World; or an Account of any Bird, Beast, or Plant... that hath been descib'd by Travellers." Alden & Landis 705/90; Hill 774; Cox I, p. 10; Sabin 30482.
