Provenance : Walter Rodd, bookseller, nephew of Thomas Rodd (inscription on first leaf to) Sir Thomas Phillipps (3 page ALS from Thomas Rodd to Phillipps laid-in in which he details the sale and reveals that he was the cataloguer). David Hartley was a member of Parliament and intimate friend of Benjamin Franklin This relationship brought about his appointment as plenipotentiary for the peace negotiations between Britain and America, which were represented by Franklin, in Paris. Hartley's archives constitute one of the most important collections of autograph Americana ever sold by auction. The 85 lots here contain all his correspondences with the British Government, various statesmen, and with Franklin. "Six volumes of letters and other documents relating to the peace went to America and passed into the collection of L.Z. Leiter of Washington" (DNB). These documents eventually passed into the William L. Clements library in Ann Arbor, Michigan; other papers are now in the British Library.
