HARTLEY EDMUND: (1847-1919) English Colonel, Victoria Cross winner for his actions during the Basuto Gun War in South Africa on 5th June 1879. A.L.S., Edmund B Hartley, two pages, 8vo, Warwick Square, London, 27th June 1885, to E. Windentt Esq. Hartley forwards his correspondent a portion 'of a letter I received from General Gordon at King Williamstown So. Africa in August 1882', and adds 'As the letter is purely a private one I do not send it to you in toto'. With blank integral leaf featuring a lightly affixed newspaper obituary for Hartley. Together with Charles George Gordon (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. Dark ink signature ('C. G. Gordon') and five additional lines of holograph text, on a piece removed from the conclusion of a letter, being the original enclosure referred to by Hartley, bearing the pencil date of 6th August 1882 in an unidentified hand.
