On a label affixed to the stretcher, the artist explains the title of the painting, "Dominique remodeled a house with the help of his friends and relations. They clambered all over the thing and worked everywhere at once..." A second label indicates that the painting was exhibited at the Irvington (New Jersey) Museum in a two-person exhibition in 1943.
