(Restored, expert repairs to title with some letters possibly in facsimile, A2-C1 with closed internal tear through 7 lines of text, another closed tear at inner margin of each leaf often affecting first word of one line, other neat marginal repairs, filled hole on E4 affecting several letters recto and verso.) 19th-century polished calf by Lloyd, triple gilt fillets, gilt-panelled spine with red morocco lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (lightly rubbed, spine chipped at head). Provenance : 'Puttick's Sale 12 December [19]30 lot 260' (note of purchase by Bernard Quaritch and collation note on rear endpaper signed 'E.M.D.'). ONLY EDITION OF THIS EARLY ROGUE BIOGRAPHY, published anonymously, the postscript assuring the reader that it was Jackson's own autobiography, written in Newgate while he awaited execution. Head, a one time bookseller well-acquainted with low life, is best known as the author of The English Rogue . Wing H-1256; together with: The Tryal and Conviction of Mary Butler, alias Strickland ... on the 12th day of October, 1699. For counterfeiting a bond of 40000l as the bond of Sir Robert Clayton , London: F.C., 1700. 8°, errata pasted onto title verso, modern wrappers. Provenance : Sir Manson M. Beeton (bookplate).
