HEBREW MANUSCRIPT. Marriage Poem. Italy, 18th century. Painted and embroidered on silk. 640 x 460 mm. Paint flaked, silk worn. A beautifully decorated Hebrew wedding poem celebrating the marriage of Shelomo Sanguinetti and Miriam Cohenet. Unusually rendered on ivory-colored silk, the hand-written poem is surrounded by an exquisite scrolled frame laden with fruits and flowers and embroidered in metallic and colored threads. Painted cherubs and birds are perched upon the scrolls. A double cartouche at top center displays the heraldic devices of the two families: a squirrel facing a tree (Sanguinetti) and two crowned blessing hands (Cohenet). Adding to the festive appearance is a trumpeting winged female figure and three joyous cherubs holding sheet music (or a poem) and playing instruments. Enclosed in modern glazed frame; not examined outside of frame.
