Although it eventually received great acclaim (and went through thirteen editions during Heine's lifetime and numerous posthumous editions) the first edition sold poorly for a decade. 2,000 copies were printed in October 1827 and a second edition was not called for until 1837. By that time, Heine's reputation as a poet, and not just a satirist, had begun to rise and the importance of the Buch der Lieder was fully established.
