♡ HELEN OGILVIE (1902-1993) Cockatoos c.1927 handcoloured linocut titled and signed in pencil below image: Cockatoos- HOgilvie- 6 x 6.5cm PROVENANCE: The Estate of Ray Hughes Shapiro Auctioneers, Sydney, 15 May 2018, Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITIONS: A Survey of Australian Relief Prints 1900-1950, Deutscher Galleries, Melbourne, 13 April - 5 May, 1978, cat. no. 124 LITERATURE: Butler, R. & Deutscher, C., A Survey of Australian Relief Prints 1900-1950, Deutscher Galleries, Melbourne, 1978, p. 64 (illustrated) OTHER NOTES: Helen Ogilvie began linocut printing after purchasing a book by the esteemed Claude Flight illustrating prints that were 'daringly modern' by Australian standards at the time. Ogilvie's first linocut prints were often hand coloured and depicting subject matter familiar to her, including farm animals, Australian flora and fauna. Estimate $2,000-3,000 Condition: There is discolouration present, seen predominantly to the lower section of the paper. There is a paper loss to the lower left of the sheet, measuring 2mm. The work has been lightly adhered to a backing piece of paper with signs of discolouration and potential acid burn. It would be our advice to have the work reframed. Frame size measuring 26.5 x 22cm.
