HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Autograph letter signed twice ("Ernest" and "Ernest Hemingway"), to Lorine Thompson, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paulo, Cuba, n.d. [ca. March 1943]. 2 pages, 4to, in dark ink on rectos only of two sheets of "Finca Vigia" onionskin stationery, minor spotting, edges a bit soiled and creased, numerous small pinholes, a few just catching a letter. CATS, DOGS AND WRITING AT THE FINCA. A warm letter offering a good view of life at Finca Vigia with Martha Gellhorn during the early war years, before both would take up separate roles as war correspondents. "It made me very happy to get the card from you and Canby and Esther and Sally. Please give them all my love. In cleaning out my desk today to do my income tax (what corresponds to me to Charles old inventory trouble) found a bill for $96.66 -- am sending check for $100.00 for interest...Where is Charles and what is his news. I miss him very much which sounds like an odd thing to write to you. Have an idea how you must miss him. I haven't written because have never been busier in my life. Will be leaving here again in a couple of days. Marty is fine and is writing a book. About half through." This is likely a referee to Martha Gellhorn's novel Liana (New York: Scribner's, 1944). "I haven't written anything since that introduction to the war book about seven months ago." Here Hemingway refers to the introduction he added to the anthology of war writing, Men at War (1942), which included section from For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms . The introduction was finished in August 1942 (see Selected Letters , p.539) which would date this letter March, 1943. "I guess we will be using mangoes for money by next year," he jokes, then adds news of the growing collection of pets at the Finca: "You'll be glad to hear we have two dogs here. A fine pointer and a small black dog of unknown breed but great charm. Also 9 cats (four of them new ones born yesterday). Please tell Giggy [Gregory, his son] Tester had 4 kittens every one marked like Thruster. I must write to Gigi too. But that is the main news. Much love to you and Charles and thank the mob for the postcard!" Not in Selected Letters , ed. Baker, and presumably unpublished.
