HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON Les Européens -- The Europeans . Paris: Verve, 1955. Quarto (360 x 270mm). 114 black and white photographs. Original illustrated papered boards REPRODUCING AN ORIGINAL DESIGN BY MIRó (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Gustav Zumsteg (inscription from Cartier-Bresson in black ink on the half-title). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CARTIER-BRESSON TO GUSTAV ZUMSTEG, the great collector of 20th-century art and owner of the famed Kronenhalle in Zürich. In his inscription the photographer modifies the title from 'Les' to 'quelques Européens'. ' The Decisive Moment is one of the greatest of all photobooks, and Cartier-Bresson repeated its artistic success three years later with The Europeans ' ( The Photobook ). This French issue, unlike the simultaneous American co-edition, was published without a dust-jacket and without a separate booklet of captions. The Photobook , vol.
