[And: several others.] A sammelband of very rare French pamphlets relating to the strife surrounding the Calvinist King Henri IV, including his attempted assassinations, persecution of the Jesuits, and eventual conversion to Catholicism. The first work is one of the many reports published on the sensational trial of the Jesuit student Jean Châtel for his attack on Henri, a rare issue by Mamert Patisson. Châtel was brutally executed and the Jesuits briefly banned from France in the aftermath. Only one other copy is recorded, held by the Berkeley Law Library. The other works include an account of Henri’s conversion, and supplemental legal texts related to the Jesuits. Many only held by a single institution, and almost no sales recorded. USTC 66140, see USTC 199065 (1593 ed)., USTC 15288, USTC 6900722. Octavo (164 x 100mm). Patisson’s woodcut device on titles of first three works, title of final work printed in red and black with woodcut device of Ancelin (final work somewhat toned). 18th-century calf (joints cracked but sturdy, small losses to leather on rear board). Provenance: erased stamp and duplicate release stamp on title page of final work. Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
