Second edition, 7 volumes, folio (504 x 322mm.), engraved title page in volume 1 with a large allegorical vignette, after Percier and Thibaud by Pillement and Née, depicting Agriculture seated in a wooded grove beside a stream holding a figure of Nature in her hand, letterpress half-title with explication of vignette on verso, letterpress half-title with explication of the vignette on verso, letterpress title-pages with woodcut publisher's monogram and half-titles in volumes 2–7, 498 engraved plates, comprising: 496 stipple engravings printed in color and finished by hand after Pierre Joseph Redouté (306) and Pancrace Bessa (190; 3 of which are after original sketches of date palms done in Egypt by Henri Joseph Redouté by Gabriel, Lemaire, Jarry, Mlle. Brenet, Mlle. Janinet, Dubreuil, and some 45 others, 2 uncoloured and unsigned plates of olive presses, later green half morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spines with raised bands in six compartments, top edges gilt, green endpapers, foxing
A FINE, TALL COPY. This second edition "was actually an entirely new book, now generally referred to as the Nouveau Duhamel… No less than twenty-nine engravers were engaged for this reproduction of Redouté's paintings. The book was virtually new, although it carried as its author the name of France's outstanding dendrologist of the mid-eighteenth century. The plates were new and the text was rewritten by six different botanists. In its new form the book remained for decades one of the basic works for western dendrological botany" (Stafleu, in Hunt, Redoutéana).

PROVENANCE:Noted in the Bakeham House library inventory, 1937, as having been removed from Park Street. Henry Rogers Broughton bought Bakeham house, near Windsor, in 1932 with his wife Diana, which is where his natural history collection first began.
