HENRY VIII, King of England (1509-1547). Document signed ('Henry R'), a memorandum (addressed to the King at the head) of the text for Letters Patent for Stephen van Haschenburg, n.p., n.d., in Latin, signed in upper left corner, 18 lines in brown ink on vellum, one membrane, 160 x 380 mm , the text roughly cancelled with 10 diagonal ink strokes, 3 lines in English at the head, (19th-century annotation in lower left margin, later endorsement on verso, a few small ink smudges, traces of mounting on verso). An application for Letters Patent for a licence for Toulouse woad and Gascon wines: 'Numerum et quantitatem Mille Doliorum sive tonellorum, gualdi sive Pastelli de Tholosa in vulgare vocati Tholous woad. Necnon vinorum de Vascona ... in Civitate Burdegalie et alibi in partibus Francie Flandre Holandi Selandi et Brabantie...' [A licence for the number and quantity of a thousand casks or tuns of woad or pastel of Toulouse, called in the vulgar 'Tholous woad', and also of wines of Gascony ... in Burgundy and elsewhere in the regions France, Flanders, Holland, Zeeland and Brabant]. The licence continues with permission to trade in ships of different nations, and to import. The grantee may be identical with the 'Stephen Haschenperg' who wrote to Thomas Cromwell in 1535 offering to serve him as an architect or builder. ( CSP Henry VIII: Foreign and Domestic vol.VIII, 1111). Toulouse woad and Gascony wines were two of the imports which legislation of the previous reign had specifically prohibited from being carried in foreign shipping.
