HENRY VIII ( King of England , 1509-1547). Letters patent WITH FINE INITIAL LETTER PORTRAIT, 190 x 115mm, Westminster, 22 February 1538, a grant to Robert Tyrwytt Esquire of the former monastery of Staynfeld [Stanfield] in Lincolnshire and its lands, amounting to 240 acres of arable land, 299 acres pasture and 123 of meadow, together with the rectories of Appley and Kynthorp, and the reversions of two grants made by Elizabeth Baysby, the last Prioress of Staynfeld, the whole to replace a previous grant of 26 March 1537, for a payment of £737-6-10 and a ground rent of £5-2-2, elaborate strapwork majuscules to first line, decorated with heraldic emblems, the initial letter portrait 190 x 115mm showing a youthful, bearded king enthroned with orb and sceptre, the document in Latin, on vellum, one membrane, 505 x 975mm (slightly abraded at upper margin), auditor's endorsement of John Wyseman; good impression of the great seal of England in brown wax, pendant on green and white silk cords, diameter 120mm (slightly rubbed). The Benedictine priory of Stanfield or Steinfield in Lincolnshire, founded during the reign of Henry II by Henry de Percy, comprised 16 nuns at its suppression.
