HENRY VIII (King of England). Assertio septem Sacramentorum adversus Martin. Lutherum. London: Richard Pynson, 12 July 1521. 4° (224 x 155mm.). Roman type. [a], b-t 4 v 2 . Woodcut title border, two eight-line and three six-line initials (title torn and neatly repaired with the final word of the title supplied in manuscript, some other neat repairs mainly to the blank margins, stained). Late 18th-century diced russia gilt (rebacked, old spine laid down). Provenance : C.W.H.Sotheby (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of Henry VIII famous attack on Luther, dedicated to Pope Leo X. The work was apparently from Henry's pen alone, although Wolsey, More, Gardiner, Fisher and Edward Lee have all been muted as at least co-authors. In any case it carried enough intellectual weight to warrant a rejoinder from Luther, and prompted Leo to proclaim Henry 'Fidei Defensor'. STC 13078.
