HERBAL] [ASKHAM, ANTHONY]. A litle herball of the properties of herbes, newly amended [and] corrected, wyth certayn additions... . Imprint from colophon: [Imprynted at London: In Paules churcheyearde, at the signe of the Swanne, by Ihon Kynge, [1561]. Modern full morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt lettering to spine. 5 3/8 x 3 3/8 inches (14 x 9 cm); lacks title (provided in facsimile), A-I^8 K^8. Restoration and remargining to first signature touching and obscuring text at places, intermittent small stains and markings, neat tissue repair to wormhole in gutter, the first text leaf with two early ink drawings, the verso of the final leaf and blank with early annotations, pen trials and signatures, a good copy of a rare work albeit lacking its original title. Scarce in any condition, we trace no copies of this title at auction in recent years and few institutional holdings. While the work is most often attributed to the astrologer Anthony Askham (he is mentioned in the title in regards to his 1550 almanac), the true authorship of this book, a variation of an herbal of medieval origin which is largely derived from Banckes' Herball, remains unknown. This is sold with a copy of the Castel of Helthe Corrected, possibly the edition of 1541, but lacking at least the first signature of eight leaves, and with the terminal leaves placed at the front, thus severely defective. The first work ESTC S104418; STC (2nd ed.) 13175.19. C Collection from the Estate of Robert Rieber
