HESKETH OF RUFFORD, Robert (ca 1570-1620). A collection of partly autograph (?) manuscript transcripts of documents, probably compiled in connection with his appointment as High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1600, and notes on genealogical and historical matters, written in brown ink mostly in an Elizabethan secretary hand (some pages in an italic hand and practising signatures and paraphs), altogether approximately 200 pages, folio , on 139 leaves, mostly 285--180mm (some leaves numbered, blanks, a few trimmed at upper and lower edges occasionally affecting words mostly in first lines of text, slight browning and wear to outer edges, occasional wormholes). Bound mid-20th century, reusing old oak bevelled boards. The collection includes an order to constables (3 August 1580), a list of charges for use at the Assizes (f.4), a copy of 'The Oathe' (f.9), copies of documents 1564 and later, (f.15v etc), Jury Charges for Justices of the Peace, dated 13 April 1591 (f.67v), 'The charges of a Fynne at Lancaster' (f.68r), an order issued by Hesketh and other officers specifying sums to be raised for the repair of bridges in the county (f.64v), a warrant and letter by Hesketh (ff71-72), a copy of the Certificate of Sir Thomas Bromley on his appointment as Lord Chancellor in 1579 (f.73); genealogical notes (ff 74-122]; heraldic notes (f.129v), a list of the crown jewels (f.134r); copies of charters, bonds, indentures and other items, 'The last will & testament of the moste mightie prince Kinge Henri the Eyght' (f.143v), 'Thes thinges following to be prepared for the Installcion of a Knight of the Garter', and a jury list relating to the trial and death of Ferdinando, Earl of Derby (f.145r). It was the duty of the High Sheriff as the representative of the Crown to make the preparations for the Assizes. Both Robert Hesketh and his father held the appointment, and it is likely that the letters and documents in the first part of the manuscript were transcribed as part of Robert's working papers. The family of Hesketh of Rufford was prominent in the affairs of the County Palatine, owning several large estates. Robert Hesketh of Rufford, was Member of Parliament for Lancashire from 1597-1598 and High Sheriff in 1600. He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Hesketh of Rufford (d.1588) who had served at the siege of Leith and was High Sheriff in 1563, by his marriage to Alice Holcroft. His grandfather, also named Robert, was knighted by Henry VIII for his valour in France. A recusant brother, Thomas (1560-1613), was an important correspondent of the herbalist John Gerard and recorded the now vanished 'Primula veris Heskethi'. Richard, another member of the family, was executed in 1593 for supporting the alleged pretensions of Ferdinando, Lord Strange, on succeeding his father as Earl of Derby in 1592, to be Elizabeth I's heir.
