HESSE, Hermann (1877-1962). Four typewritten poems, Ein paar Gedichte welche nicht in der Gesamtausgabe meiner Gedichte stehen , with an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR of a Ticino landscape, 230 x 250 mm., autograph dedication signed, n.d., 12 leaves, 8vo . A series of letters including Three autograph letters signed and one unsigned ( incomplete, lacking first page ), five autograph postcards signed, eight typewritten letters signed and one unsigned, and five typewritten postcards signed, all addressed to Kitty de Josselin de Jong (in Holland and Germany), Montagnola near Lugano (12), Kirchberg (3), Bremberg (1) and Baden/Zurich (6), 28 July 1939 - 15 July 1958 (including 3 letters n.d.), in German, one letter including a page written by his wife, two letters with pictorial heading . Four typewritten poems signed, Der Heiland, Bei einem Grabe, Stunden im Garten (enclosed with letters of 7 December 1940, 14 June 1941 and 15 May 1945) and Spätsommer, 23 September 1940, together approximately 10 pages in autograph, 27 typewritten pages, mostly 8vo, 11 autograph envelopes, one printed poem signed, one printed watercolour signed, six photographs (two signed on verso), a copy of 'Zehn Gedichte' [privately printed], Bern [1939 ?] and other printed ephemera (one signed) . An intimate series of letters, written mostly during the war years. He complains about advancing age, ill-health, gout, failing eye-sight, problems that stop him from writing. He explains that he had been able to write only 3 poems during 1940. "Mir selber geht es wie den meisten alten Leuten: Die Kräfte nehmen ab, die Beschwerden zu". He regrets that his book ' Narziss und Goldmund ' cannot be published in Germany, because he refuses to cut the episode describing a medieval Jewish pogrom. Later, in October 1945 he writes about the total bankruptcy of Germany and that he has little hope for the future.
