These two works stem from the latter years of World War II ... when the tone of her work adopted a distinct symbolic and fantastical edge. These peculiar characters reflect a darker, moodier Swanzy and contrast greatly with her soft, rhythmic cubist landscapes. But in their arresting use of colour and powerful composition, both constants throughout her oeuvre, they complement the satirical tone and demand the viewer’s attention more
