Signature: signed lower left; with Mary Swanzy Studio Sale stamp on stretcher on reverse; also with Pyms Gallery label affixed on reverse Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 51 by 61cm., 20 by 24in. Provenance: Provenance:Family of the artist; Christie's, The Irish Sale Part II, Including works from the Studio of Mary Swanzy 10 May 2007,lot 324 Private collection Exhibited: Exhibited:Taylor Galleries, Dublin, 1982, no.57; Pyms Gallery, London, 1987, no.57; 'Exhibition of Paintings by Mary Swanzy HRHA, Pyms Gallery, London, May 1998, number 33 Mary Swanzy’s eclectic style drew on trends she discovered upon her many travels throughout her lengthy career spanning almost eighty years. These two works stem from the latter years of World War II ... when the tone of her work adopted a distinct symbolic and fantastical edge. These peculiar characters reflect a darker, moodier Swanzy and contrast greatly with her soft, rhythmic cubist landscapes. But in their arresting use of colour and powerful composition, both constants throughout her oeuvre, they complement the satirical tone and demand the viewer’s attention more
