[2], 319, [1 errata] pp. Illustrated with wood-engraved plates, maps, a facsimile letter. 8vo (227 x 137 mm). Original printed wrappers. Two library inkstamps to title-page, bookplate, numbering on upper cover but internally clean and partially unopened. First edition, a rare account recording the establishment of the mission on New Caledonia by Monseigneurs Epalle and Collomb in the late 1840s and their subsequent deaths. Illustrates Australian aborigines, emus, kangaroo, a view of the La Perouse monument (at “Botanibae”), Maoris, much more. Not in Hill or Ferguson. The second edition was published in Paris in 1861.
