With 3 copper-engraved plates; folding copper-engraved map. (folio) 39x24 cm (15½x9¼"), period calf, joints repaired with leather sometime past. Large, handsomely printed 18th century edition of Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which gained him the title "The Father of English History". Sometimes referred to as Saint Bede, the 7th-8th century English monk at the monastery of St. Peter and its companion monastery of St. Paul in the Kingdom of Northumbria of the Angles, is considered by many historians to be the single most important scholar of antiquity for the period between the death of Pope Gregory I in 604 and the coronation of Charlemagne in 800.
