Title: Historical and Statistical Information, Respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States: Collected and Prepared Under the Direction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Author: Schoolcraft, Henry Rowe Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Lippincott, Grambo Date: 1851-55 Description: Volumes 1 and 5 only (of 6). 108 plates and maps (of 112 on 111 sheets), including many in color. (4to) 13x10, original cloth, gilt emblem on front cover and in blind on rear covers. First Edition of Volume 1, later printing (with shortened title) of Volume 5. 2 volumes from Schoolcraft's marvelous compendium of artifacts and customs of the American Indian, although Sabin notes that Field is somewhat critical, calling the six volumes "little more than a magazine, of such matter relating to the Indians as fell into his hand, including a rehash of all that he had written before and printed and numerous other forms...." Notwithstanding this criticism, still significant for the numerous plates of tools, weapons and other artifacts, pictographs, bright chromolithographs, and depictions of various paraphernalia; the many engravings from drawings by Seth Eastman include depictions of Indian life and culture. Howes S183. Volume I inscribed by George W. Manypenny, Commissioner of Indian Affairs; Volume 5 inscribed by Charles Mix, Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Lot Amendments Condition: Spines faded, cloth worn and soiled, hinges shaken; lacking 4 plates (Plates 42 and 46 from Volume I; Plates 2 and 4 from Volume 5), 2 other plates in Volume 1 damaged (10 and 49), several plates detached; pages 131/132 lacking from volume one, some foxing; else good. Should be examined, sold as is. Item number: 192950
