Hobbes, Thomas. Leviathan, or The Matter, Forme, & Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civill. London, Andrew Crooke, 1651. Fol. Kupfertit. , 3 Bll., 394 (falsch 396) SS., 1 gef. Tab. Mod. kastanienbraun Maroquin mit etwas Rücken- u. Deckelblindpr., Rsch. u. Innenkantenverg., in passendem Hmaroquin-Schuber.
Macdonald/Hargreaves 42; PMM 138; Wing 2 H 2246; Wither to Prior 454; vgl. Humpert 12969 u. Kress 830f. - Erste Ausgabe. "Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) ... was born in the year of the Armada. His long life spanned one of the most momentous periods of English history, and he was one of its most conspicuous figures, at once celebrated and abhorred... it was not until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he fled to Paris and became tutor to the Prince of Wales, that he embarked on his greatest work. Leviathan is the product of those troubled times... Though Hobbes' ideas have never appealed to proponents of the individual rights of men..., the fundamental nature of his speculation has stimulated philosophers from Spinoza to the school of Bentham, who reinstated him in his position as the most original political philosopher of his time" (PMM). A complete copy of the first printing of the first edition, with "head" ornament on letterpress title-page and other distinguishing features called for by Macdonald/Hargreaves, washed, edges brittle and with repairs, minor loss of image to engraved title-page, major repairs to folding table entailing minor loss of text, faded old owner's entry to letterpress title-page; modern brown morocco binding (spine somewhat faded) in matching slipcase.
