(11 3/8 x 7 3/16 in.), contemporary calf over pasteboard, covers panelled in blind, spine in six compartments, later morocco lettering-piece in the second, the remainder gold-tooled, board edges ruled in gilt, edges red-sprinkled, spine linings from a sixteenth-century printed liturgical text, head of spine and corners worn with loss to leather at front lower corner and head of spine, outer joints slightly worn, covers shellacked, fore-edge and lower turn-ins renewed, leather along upper board edges cracked and torn in spite of small repairs, upper inner hinge broken, perforation to Tt4 catching 2 letters, insignificant marginal tears to 7 leaves . FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with head ornament on title, additional engraved title, folding letterpress table. Grolier Wither to Prior 454; Pforzheimer 491; PMM 138; Wing 2246. Provenance : A few nineteenth-century ink deletions and marginal emendations -- Lord Clifford, ink stamp on front pastedown -- Blairhame, morocco bookplate on same pastedown.
