HOBSON, Geoffrey Dudley (1882-1949). Blind-Stamped Panels in the English Book-Trade c. 1485-1555 . London: Kitchen & Barratt Ltd. for the Bibliographical Society, 1944. 4 o (221 x 172 mm). 8 plates. FINELY BOUND BY SYBIL PYE for G.D. Hobson at Newick in 1947: gold-tooled chocolate brown morocco, inlaid with fawn morocco to a semi-abstract design of pediment and pillars, raised bands on spine with longitudinal lettering, signed and dated on turn-ins, edges uncut. Cloth folding case. Provenance : G.D. Hobson; with three autograph letters signed by the binder to the author (18th, 24th and 29th January 1947): "I am so glad you like the new binding -- I am interested that you are reminded of our Restoration books; this never entered my head! though of course I see the connection. It was the pleasant square shape of your book that reminded me of an early Italian painting where pillars play an important point, and this started me off... I think it is true that anything one has really enjoyed in design becomes a part of one's subconscious furniture; and certainly those magnificent Restoration books in the B.M. and elsewhere have become a part of mine! So no doubt this emerged in treating your book..." THE AUTHOR'S OWN COPY, in a highly interesting binding for which Sybil Pye charged ten guineas. The study was published as Supplement to the Bibliographical Society's Transactions No. 17 . BBB Wittockiana 57; BBB Harvard 48.
