HOFMANNSTHAL, Hugo von (1874-1929). Autograph letter signed addressed to 'Sehr geehrter Herr Doctor', Bad Aussee, 21 August [19]19, in German , writing to a correspondent who has asked to visit him and explaining that he does not wish to receive unannounced visitors either in Vienna or in Rodaun, nor the village where he is staying, particularly as in such a small place it would be impossible to pretend not to be there, 1½ pages, 4to . Hofmannsthal explains that he is working ten hours a day trying to write and to get certain lines just right, and cannot cope with visitors, even his closest friends. This is not a neurotic eccentricity but the result of his profession.
