HOLBEIN, Hans. Imitations of the Original Drawings by... Holbein, in the collection of his majesty, for the portraits of the illustrious persons of the court of Henry VIII. With biographical tracts [by Edmund Lodge]. Published by John Chamberlaine. London: W.Bulmer and Co. for John Chamberlaine, 1792-[1801]. 2° (550 x 420mm.). Variant preliminary text (i.e. the List of Plates and Announcement on a single leaf are replaced by To the Public , 2pp.; Simple and General Order of Chronology... T.Bensley, Printer , 1p.; Chronological Arrangement in Classes , 1p.). 84 stipple-engraved plates, printed in colours, by Bartolozzi and others after Holbein on 83 leaves (24 of the plates present in two states giving a plate total of 107), extra-illustrated with one plate on india paper mounted (nine plates spotted, the imprint of one shaved). Near-contemporary blue straight-grained morocco, the covers ruled in gilt and blind, with various roll-tools and cornerpieces in blind, spine in seven compartments with double raised bands, lettered in gilt in four, the top and bottom compartments with the centrally placed gilt crests of WILLIAM BECKFORD OF FONTHILL, red moiré silk liners and doublures, wide turn-ins tooled in gilt and blind, g.e. (extremities rubbed, some scuffing to covers). Provenance : William Beckford (1759-1844, with characteristically caustic manuscript notes in his hand(?) on recto of front blank). AN EXTRA-ORDINARY COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, on large paper, apparently collected by and bound to the order of Beckford. 'This magnificent work is surely the finest example of English color printing.'(Ray). The plates are present in the following permutations: 51 in colours on variously sized pink paper mounted on white drawing paper; 15 coloured plates (two finished by hand) on 14 sheets of white paper; 5 in black and white on 4 sheets of white paper (2 printed before the names were added); 15 in colours on pink paper; 19 in black and white on cream paper (one sheet with a lilac wash; 12 printed before the names were added, 5 printed before names and the legend "In His Majesty's Collection" were added, two printed before all letters); 2 plates on oatmeal coloured paper (one coloured, one in black and white printed before the name was added); 1 in colours on light pink paper mounted on white drawing paper; 1 in colours on white paper mounted on white drawing paper. see Abbey Life 205; see Ray 19.
