II], 1577. 4 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (277 x 192mm). Black letter, double column; four title-pages within woodcut borders [McKerrow and Ferguson 147a], woodcut printer's device [McKerrow 118], author's woodcut arms on versos of titles, 211 woodcuts in 1,026 occurrences. (Without blank *b*6, without final leaf of errata in vol. 1, lacking H2 from vol. 1 part III, vol. 1 part I title repaired with some facsimile, \\h3 repaired, vol. 2 part I title lacking, supplied in facsimile, \\h2-3 in vol. 2 repaired with some facsimile, double-page woodcut of the Siege of Edinburgh supplied in facsimile, a few leaves possibly supplied from another copy, some margins renewed, some shoulder-notes and a few headlines shaved, some repairs, a few with loss of text, occasional soiling, some underlining in index.) 19th-century diced calf gilt, rampant lion holding fleur-de-lys in spine compartments (covers detached, corners rubbed). Provenance: Edward Viles (inscription on binder's blank) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). FIRST EDITION of one of the most copiously illustrated secular texts of the Tudor era (Luborsky and Ingram). Reginald Wolfe began the Chronicles , devoted 25 years to compiling the work, and left it unfinished at his death in 1573. Holinshed had assisted Wolfe for a number of years and took over the project. He narrowed the scope to the British Isles and abandoned plans to publish maps, by then rendered unnecessary by the preparation of Saxton's atlas. Copies bear various imprints with the names of Hunne, John Harrison Lucas Harrison or George Bishop, who were enlisted 'to defray the charges for the impression.'
