(Part I: leaf r1 ‘Faultes escaped’ bound before A1, leaves A3 and o2 with marginal repairs, minor marginal worming from beginning through to gathering i; part II: leaf ()1 ‘Faultes… escaped’ bound before *a*1, Bb8 remargined; part III: a few leaves lightly browned, leaves at end lightly soiled; part IV: lacking ¶ 2 title and preface, leaf signed 4E5 ‘The names of the Knights made at Leith’ and inserted after 4E4 soiled and remargined, double-page woodcut just trimmed at right-hand margin, () 2 ‘Faultes… escaped in the printing of the first part of the English Historie before the conquest’ bound after 4Z2, final leaf N2 remargined, a few leaves trimmed close just touching catchwords or side-notes, scattered spotting and staining.) Black calf, vol. I with the contemporary covers to vol. I expertly inlaid and portions of the contemporary spines preserved, covers with central gilt arabesques, the whole furbished and with new endpapers. Provenance : William Kyllygrewe (contemporary ink ownership inscriptions of titles). FIRST EDITION of one of ‘the most copiously illustrated secular texts of the Tudor era’ (Luborsky and Ingram). Reginald Wolfe began the Chronicles, devoted 25 years to compiling the work, and left it unfinished at his death in 1573. Holinshed had assisted Wolfe for a number of years and took over the project. He narrowed the scope to the British Isles and abandoned plans to publish maps, by then rendered unnecessary by the preparation of Saxton's atlas.
