Beschreibung:

Holograph Manuscript of F.E. Lenon, in pencil and pen, approx. 150 pages recto and verso, in two volumes, 12mo and 16mo, various places including San Francisco, Hawaii, and the Philippine Islands, November 3, 1898 to November 4, 1899, being a diary kept by Lenon during the passage from the West Coast to the Philippines and back again, some toning to leaves throughout, staining and wear to paper covers of larger journal; cloth cover of smaller journal separated, spine and covers detached, smudging to leaves, but legible. Together with a printed roster of the 51st Iowa Infantry Regiment and related newspaper clippings. Frederick E. Lenon (whose name is spelled in the printed roster as "Lennon") kept these two journals faithfully during his year tenure with the 51st Iowa. He begins in November of 1898 describing his company's departure from San Francisco by transit and the epidemic of sea-sickness suffered by the men during their first days at sea. He also gives a detailed description of life on board, describing the meager meals, the makeshift showers, and the gambling amongst soldiers. After several days at sea, the transport approaches Hawaii where the regiment spends some time before heading off for the Philippines where he describes interactions with the natives and shark attacks. Finally, in February of 1899, his regiment sees combat at Cavite. From February 5, 1899: "In the morning our Co. was ordered out to the trenches we were within 400 yds of the Insergents lines and could see them quite plain. The firing continued all day at Manila. We could see the battle ships firing it was a grand sight. The Insergents are undoubtly putting up a hard fight. Report is they have killed over 100 men or 15 officers." An interesting and detailed record of military life.
