HOMER. [ Opera , in Greek, part two only:] Ulyssea - Batrachomyomachia - Hymni , Venice: Aldine Press, June 1517. One (of 2) parts, 8°, without the Iliad , and without the Life of Homer , contained on 56 leaves bound indiscriminately with the Iliad or the Odyssey volume, Greek type (text), italic type (title contents, dedication), printer's device on title, repeated on final verso, initial spaces with guide-letter, 30 lines and headline (lightly browned), 18th-century speckled calf, gilt spine with red leather lettering-piece, speckled edges (wear at head and foot of spine). Second Aldine edition, substantially more correct than either the first of 1504 or the third of 1524, so that Renouard considered it a 'new text'. RARE, the Ahmanson-Murphy collection also has only one volume ( Odyssey ) of this edition. Adams H742; Ahmanson-Murphy 134; Renouard 80.3. JUVENAL (60-140). Satyrae XVI - PERSIUS (34-62). Satyrae VI Venice: Aldus Manutius August 1501. Aldine 8°, Italic type 1:180, 30 lines and headline, initial-spaces with guide-letter, Paper: 3 hillocks with a cross surmount (lacks 2 leaves in gathering G, small wormholes affecting some letters, small marginal stain, early scribbles and ink deletions, first quire slightly trimmed at lower margin), 19th-century vellum, flat gilt, black and red leather spine labels; College of St. Anne, ?17th-century title inscription). FIRST ALDINE EDITION. The fourth book in the series of portable volumes, after the Virgil, Horace, and Petrarch, which Aldus describes in his preface as carried around more easily, learnt by heart, and read by all.
