HONDIUS, Henricus (1597-1651). Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica . Amsterdam: Janssonius, 1641.
HONDIUS, Henricus (1597-1651). Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica . Amsterdam: Janssonius, 1641. Engraved hand-colored world map in two hemispheres, image 381 x 545 mm (502 x 587 mm sheet) the borders richly decorated with allegorical depictions of the four elements and of the continents, medallion portraits of Julius Caesar Ptolemy, Mercator and Jodocus Hondius at the corners, and celestial sphere at upper center, Dutch text on verso. (Folds reinforced in margins on verso, slight creasing along fold, some light staining, a few tiny marginal worm holes.) Matted and framed. Second state (of four) of one of the most important and decorative world maps of the mid-17th century. First published in 1630 as part of Jan Jansson's and H. Hondius's revision of the Mercator-Hondius atlas, the map was one of the earliest to show California as an island. Other innovations include the depiction of the northwestern coastline of Australia and a more correct representation of north-east Canada with Baffin Island ("Queen Anne's forland") shown correctly as an island rather than a peninsula. This copy was issued with one of the French editions of the atlas, published in 1641 and later. Schilder, Australia Unveiled, 39; Shirley 336.
