(Title-page lightly worn, very occasional light soiling.) Gold-tooled blue morocco, gilt edges, by J. Clarke signed on front flyleaf (slightly mottled). Provenance : price £5.5.0 pencilled on front flyleaf. 'An unrivalled piece of typography' (Dibdin, Spenceriana ). The fine full-page woodcuts make their first appearance here. In the opinion of Camerini, they are among the most beautiful to adorn an Italian Book of Hours. Together with the small cuts and criblé borderpieces, they show French influence; the black-ground cuts are among the first of their kind in Italy (cf. Hind, p.500). Lacombe cites one copy with a final 4-leaf Tavola vulgar ; this is neither present in the Botfield copy, nor called for elsewhere.
