Collation: \Kp\k 8 + 1 2 a-x 8 (\Kp\k1r title in red with Giunta device, \Kp\k1v-+3v calendar, +4r-+6v Gospel sequence [4 small cuts of the Evangelists], +7r-+12r Passion according to St. John [small cut of the Betrayal], +12v-g5r Hours of the Virgin [Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Annunciation to the Shepherds, Adoration, Presentation in the Temple, Flight into Egypt, Massacre of the Innocents, g5v-8r Missa BVM [Adoration with Instruments of the Passion], g8v-k1r Seven Penitential Psalms [Bathsheba], k1r-4r Athanasian Creed, k4v-o5r Office of the Dead [Death of the Virgin], o5v-p1r Office of the Cross [Crucifixion], p1v-4r Office of the Holy Spirit [Pentecost], p4v-7v Canticum graduum , p8r-r6r Office of the Trinity, of the Saints, Canticum BVM [1 small cut], r6v-s6v Prayers ascribed to SS. Augustine, Gregory and Bernard [4 small cuts], s7r-x7r Obsecro te and other prayers [2 small cuts], x7r-8r Litany, x8r colophon, x8v blank). 188 leaves. Printed in red and black, several 'KL' in calendar painted over in gold. Gothic types. Quire signatures printed at upper outside corner. 13 large and 12 small woodcuts, full woodcut composite border to each page (except those with full-page cuts) consisting of small portraits, scenes or decoration, woodcut criblé and historiated initials, Giunta lily device on title. (Title-page lightly worn, very occasional light soiling.) Gold-tooled blue morocco, gilt edges, by J. Clarke signed on front flyleaf (slightly mottled). Provenance : price £5.5.0 pencilled on front flyleaf. 'An unrivalled piece of typography' (Dibdin, Spenceriana ). The fine full-page woodcuts make their first appearance here. In the opinion of Camerini, they are among the most beautiful to adorn an Italian Book of Hours. Together with the small cuts and criblé borderpieces, they show French influence; the black-ground cuts are among the first of their kind in Italy (cf. Hind, p.500). Lacombe cites one copy with a final 4-leaf Tavola vulgar ; this is neither present in the Botfield copy, nor called for elsewhere. Bohatta 721a; Brunet IV, 168; Camerini Annali , 60; Essling 465 (noting that a cut of the Nativity is repeated on g8; the Botfield copy has Bathsheba on g8); Lacombe 568-9 (citing Bib. Nat. paper copy with final quire of 4 lvs. containing a Tavola vulgar , not present in the Bib. Nat. vellum copy); Renouard, Alde , p.xix, no. 21 (190 lvs.); Sander 5069 (citing a vellum copy sold at Milan in 1925 lacking 4 lvs.); Van Praet, Bib. du Roi , I, p.101, no. 114, and V, p.363 (citing another vellum copy in the library of l'Abbé de la Lena at Lucca).
