Type: 98B. 18 large metalcuts, large architectural frame around all large cuts (except Martyrdom of St. John), multiple-piece ornamental and historiated border to all other pages, initials alternating in red or blue, paragraph marks in red or blue. (A few borders shaved, light stains in a few leaves, first leaf slightly rubbed, small repaired tears in final 2 leaves.) Early 20th-century brown morocco, panelled with gilt and blind fillets, vellum endleaves, gilt edges. Provenance: identifications of border cycles added in a 17th/18th-century French hand; C.W. Dyson Perrins (label, sale Sotheby's, 5 November 1946, lot 444, £45 to Foyle). The majority of the metalcuts belong to the Pigouchet-Vostre set 3, including the "remarkable" (Davies) Adoration of the Sheperds, with the names of the shepherds and their wives cut onto the block. The cut of Job is from set 4, and the Martyrdom of St. John and the Apostles at the Fountain are both from set 5. The Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation are not listed by Davies but stylistically belong to set 3. Lacombe 266; Brunet V, 1594, no.97.
