Liquid-gold initials, paragraph marks and line-filler on alternating red, blue or purple ground. (A4 cut down with slight loss of text, G6 remargined, some light dampstaining with resultant off-setting of colour.) 18th-century calf, double gilt fillet on sides (rebacked in brown morocco, light stain on rear cover). Guillaume Tardif composed a 'petit volume d'Heures', comprising prayers, Suffrages in calendar order, and the seven penitential Psalms in French, for his patron Charles VIII. Vérard, who also enjoyed royal patronage, incorporated these additions into his Grandes Heures , which he issued almost concurrently for the use of Paris, Poitiers, and Rouen. These three editions share type-settings, with variants in the Hours of the Virgin allowing for the different uses. Vérard's first edition of the Grandes Heures (the only one dated: 20 August 1490) did not contain any additions by Tardif, and his second edition contained only Tardif's translation of the Seven Pentitential Psalms.
