Collation: a-p 8 q 4 (a1r title with Kerver device, a1v almanac for 1497-1520 in French, a2r anatomical man, a2v-8r calendar, French verses at foot of each month, a8v-b3v Gospel sequence [Martyrdom of St. John], b4r-c1v Passion according to St. John [Betrayal], c2r-g2r Hours of the Virgin [Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Annunciation to the Shepherds, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation in the Temple, Flight into Egypt, Coronation of the Virgin, g2v-h3r Seven Penitential Psalms [Bathsheba], h3v-l1r Office of the Dead [Job on his dungheap], l1v-5r Hours of the Cross and of the Holy Ghost [Crucifixion, Pentecost], l5v-n8v Suffrages [Trinity, 24 small cuts], o1r-p5r Seven prayers of St Gregory, and various prayers mostly in French, including the Missus est Gabriel in Latin [Emblems of the Passion], p5v-q5r Office of the Virgin of Mercy, prayers of SS. Large Kerver device, full-page anatomical man, 16 large metcuts and 25 small metalcut portraits ALL ILLUMINATED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, multiple-piece ornamental and historiated borders to each page, those surrounding the large cuts also with contemporary hand-colouring, liquid-gold initials and line-filler on alternating pink and blue ground, yellow capital strokes. (Repaired small hole in border of c1 and h4.) 18th-century panelled red morocco gilt, 2 black leather spine lables, mottled edges. Provenance : Feast of St. Claude added to calendar; Leo Olschki (label); C.W. Dyson Perrins (label, sale Sotheby's 5 November 1946, lot 447 £120 to Maggs). Davies enumerated 12 metalcut illustrations in Kerver's first "small" set; ten of these are present here. In addition, there are seven which belong to the set but are not mentioned by Davies. These too are derived from Pigouchet-Vostre set 2, with the exception of Job on his dungheap, which appears to be an original treatment, depicting death murdering a man with Job and his friends oblivious in the background.
