Horae, use of Rome G. Anabat for G. & G. Hardouyn, c.1505 HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and French. Paris: Guillaume Anabat for Gilles and Germain Hardouyn [c.1505, almanac for 1500-20]. One of only two known copies (ISTC), the the other is at the Catholic University of America. The tentative imprint date is implied from Anabat’s address in the colophon (cf. Renouard). Collation: a-r8 s4 (a1r title with Hardouyn centaur device, a1v almanac for 21 years (1500-20), a2r zodiac verses in French, a2v-a8r calendar, a8v Saint John with cup of poison, b4v Kiss of Judas, d3v Visitation, d4r Annunciation, e6v Crowd admiring Virgin and Child, f5v Flagellation of Christ, f6r Crucifixion, f7r Pentecost, f8r Nativity, g4r Shepherds, g8r Magi, h4r Presentation, i5r Death of the Virgin, k7v David and Uriah, k8r Death of Uriah, m3v Dives, m4r Raising of Lazarus, r6r Virgin and emblems, s4v colophon). 18 large cuts, including variant subjects such as the Flagellation of Christ, David and Uriah, and Death of Uriah, plus Hardouyn centaur device on title, and numerous small cuts, initials and space fillers painted in gold on blue or rose grounds, text ruled faintly in red (small loss on lower corner of leaf a3). 18th-century French red morocco gilt, gilt edges (extremities worn); modern quarter morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance: acquired from Lucien Goldschmidt, New York, 7 October 1955.
