Horae, use of Rome Thielman Kerver, 1508 HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and Spanish. Paris: Thielman Kerver, 6 November 1508. An unrecorded Book of Hours published for the Spanish market, with a prayer in Spanish. Especially notable in this copy is the work of a censor, likely a Dominican, who crossed-out several words and passages, including a prayer in Spanish. As with other Horae by Kerver issued after c.1507, most of the large metal-cuts are from his “larger set,” characterized by its “greater freedom from convention in the treatment of the designs, there being an appearance of relief or modelling in comparison with the older cuts: cross-hatching and other forms of shading are introduced” (Davies). Modern red morocco gilt-tooled in Renaissance style by Miquel Rius, Barcelona (ink stamp dated 1948), doublures and silk endpapers, edges gilt (spine extremities lightly rubbed); modern quarter morocco chemise and slipcase.
