"The magician and escape artist who captured the world's imagination. Amid great publicity he extricated himself from rope, straightjackets and various locked containers. Born Ehrich Weiss in Wisconsin, he took his name from the French magician Jean Houdin. To Houdini magic was an art, and it is not surprising that he was active in exposing fraudulent mind readers and spiritualists"--W.M.
